We’ve become proficient at consuming every little aspect from that makes up our life. It’s becoming more and more important in today’s world to be more efficient, thing on your feet as well and understand and react faster then ever before. Although we are able to shift through a heap of information quickly and extract the essential day in and day out we are missing out on a lot of other things. We’re missing out on the “junk”.

I’m only going to present my concern regarding what i like to call “intellectual consumerism” although it is becoming more apparent how a lot of other things are shifting from an experience design to a consumerist design. I’ll briefly touch this aspect as we go along.

The Tv Show has become a more intimate part of a person’s life. Compared to other moments of the TV era, the low cost of equipment necessary to deliver a high definition entertainment program has enabled the producers to generate more and more content of this type.

We’ve got a broad selection of TV shows, that manage to satisfy almost everybody looking to entertain themselves for a couple of hours. The format of this audio/visual production has been carefully crafted and is meant to deliver episodes across a couple of months each year. One of the main differences between the TV show and a Film, is the distribution of the action across a longer time line. What this does to the viewer is lock him into a repeated pattern for a couple of months. Each week the viewer is presented with another sequence of the puzzle.

The problem with this particular format is the fact that it encourages a very dangerous type of addiction. As with all audio/visual productions, the user is for the most time a passive agent. The film rolls out before him but his interaction with it is limited. He’s just being a consumer, and there is little to no time to process the images as they come.

The old substitute meant to deliver a rather similar impact to the viewer has been the book. A medium that has the ability to convey the same amount of information, but one that relies on the reader’s imagination to create the whole world around him. This interaction with the story enables the reader to think and to react to what he’s reading. Although the story controls the starting point, intermediate points and destination that the reader has to travel to unwind the action locked within the pages, the reader is actually the one controlling how everything comes to life. It’s his journey, it’s personal.

In a TV show / Movie, you’re seeing what everybody else is seeing. You’ve got little to no place left to manoeuvre the way things go, and as a result will let your brain rest and instead of analysing what is going on, you end up simply recording things as they go bye. Some will argue and say that whenever they watch a tv show that’s the end result they are looking for and will get trapped into this vicious circle.

As reading is being more and more discouraged and alternative ways of obtaining knowledge are presented, i cannot stop and think of the consequences these things will have on the generations of young people that are realising what is going on in the world at this point in time.

A solution? Here is my take on the problem.

I believe that written text is one of the most important forms of knowledge sharing designed. It is powerful because it relies on interaction, and this concept, the concept of interaction is a powerful device. You will always understand something if somebody else explains it to you once and then is there to answer your questions and probably explain it once more as he’s discovered what you’re doing wrong with his words. In the written world, you get to make everything. The more you create, the more you get out of the words or formulas that are before you.

In a world where things like youtube are gaining traction, and people want to experience other places through the eyes of other peoples, words are left in one place forgot and misplaced.

Services

Checking Facebook yields hundreds of 9gag reblogs and thousands of youtube videos. Articles and other things are left somewhere behind. Publications like The Guardian and The Times develop Facebook news readers that end up making some of the most uninteresting and pour content articles viral.

The thought that less and less people challenge what is going on and decided to consume pre-chewed information should be alarming. In a society where we have access to some of the most interesting and challenging content , we chose to go the opposite way and indulge in little things that keep our minds free. But why do we need our minds free? What do we do with them most of the time? Think, i’m sure you’re joking.

A though should pass everybody’s mind. I’m relaxing right now, therefor at some point i need to be wired in. When was the last time that i experienced this state of mind? It was 9 months ago? What have i been doing all this time? It should be one of two things. I’m always wired, therefor i get the luxury to take a break at any time, or i’m sometimes plugged in and other times completely still. Today you get a weird concoction of the two that yields no palpable result, but it gets you through the day.

We consume pre-processed foods, neglect our health and spend endless nights until the early hours of the morning, but to what end? Isn’t there enough time to do everything right? No, is what i’m told. I’m told that i’m doing this and that because i am in a hurry to get this other thing done. But actually, everybody gets lost in the process and forgets what they’re suppose to do.

The disappointing thing is that nobody wants to acknowledge the truth. The day somebody comes and tells you “I’m denying having a problem, so i want to be treated like i don’t have one” is the day you realise there’s nothing you can do to help. Taking any sort of action is hard, but what is actually hard to do is making the first step.

If you’ve decided to do something, and you make the first step 50% of the problem is solved. Decided to do it today.

Bonobo – Sleepy Seven

Winter’s coming. It’s getting closer to that time of the year where we run to the high street and look for one way or another to cheer up the people we care about. I don’t know if it’s all about the cold weather outside that keeps us indoors most of the time, or the welcoming taste of a mug of mulled wine but we get closer together.

Slowly, we’re signing off to another year. Some will make some new year resolutions, others will want to turn a new page. Change and new are the words that are most predominantly used. At the end of the day, it’s what we want.

About 4 hours ago, i was saying that it’s probably a good idea not to work after 3 am. For no apparent reason, i continue to find myself working at this hour for the past few days. I’m currently running a task on the student.compute server of the university. 4 hours ago, it would have taken me about 5-6 hours to finnish it. Now, it takes only about 10-15 minutes. What’s changed? Hacks under the bonnet.

It is usually the case that things take a lot of time to get done because you’re running redundant, inefficient code. Take 10 minutes, put everything on a piece of paper using your favourite writing instrument and dive into that mess. Realise that you’re making useless calls to time consuming functions, keep an eye for catching as many repeating operations and best of all, refactor the code.

Also listening to Goran Bregovic and Pink Floyd, seems to help. I’ll let you with these tips and go get some sleep, but if i am to respect my earlier post about mornings, this is not going to be a very long sleep…

Oh, and not to forget, Python Pickle Serialisation Object is a life saver!

As you know if you’ve been reading around or better still listening to the radio station, Monocle 24 is out. I’ve so far said quite a few of things about why i like the Monocle brand (magazine & radio). Today, i’ll give you a bit of perspective regarding some of the shows you can tune in.

The Monocle Weekly

It’s the original show that was podcasted before Monocle 24. It is a mix of culture, news, and events that will shape the upcoming week. It’s now stretched to 2 hours instead of 1 and the newformat will be live tomorrow. It’s good to get it as a podcast and listen to if when you’ve got a long walk to do. If you want to get a hand on the previous editions lookup Monocle Weekly on iTunes.

Culture

The show tries to present what’s new in music, art film and media across the world. It’s the best place to get a feel of what’s going on the global culture scene. As the Monocle Magazine addresses a global reader, it’s the goal of the Culture section to present the reader, wherever he is with a relevant picture of what’s going on around him.

I strongly recommend to give these shows a go, and i believe you’re going to grow very fond of them. Also, if you find yourself home around 1 – 3 am, and want to unwind, just pop up the radio and let the music feel your room Everything will feel more calm and homier (if that’s even a word).

The past few days have been more than packed with things that needed to be crossed off the to do list. I’ve yet to come across a couple of minutes to properly update things over here, but i promise to get back at it next week. A lot of interesting things have happened meanwhile, such as the launch of Monocle 24 which i enjoy very much. I hope some of you get a chance to tune in. What you’ll find is some of the best music and reporting i personally haven’t seen in a long time.

I’ll keep this short since i know that i will probably not get more than 6 hours of sleep tonight. What was that they kept on saying? “Study, sleep, socialising. Choose two.” Oh they are so damn right about it!

6:00 pm

I’m one to fully support the early mornings. As unpleasant and uncomfortable as they may seem, i think there are a couple of strong reasons for them being the only way to start the day. I am aware of the early day model that becomes your day to day routine when you get a job, but i believe that an even earlier waking up time would be even more beneficial.

To make things simple, i will make a list of the reasons to wake up early:

  • you get to still catch the night & coffee usually tastes better
  • waking up in the shower
  • listening to the early morning radio service. (i personally go – for the BBC World Service and am impatiently waiting for the Monocle 24 to start broadcasting)
  • you can go for a run on the empty streets and catch up with some podcasts or listen to some music.
  • have enough time to prepare a healthy breakfast
  • get a chance to catch up with the emails and also plan your day
  • you get an amazing start to the day, and discover that there is enough time to do all the things you wanted to do.

Also, there are some obvious reasons for why waking up early in the morning is not your cup of {insert favourite hot beverage}.

  • the sleep is sweeter in the wee hours of the morning
  • night is more alluring then the morning sun
  • you look out of the window and see that everybody else is sleeping and are wondering what on earth is going on with you
  • you realise it’s close to mid day and you have not done anything of the millions of things that you were suppose to do

I am biased towards getting up and running early, and i can’t really see a reason for oversleeping, hence my thin list of reasons why it’s not a good idea. Conclusion? Tomorrow i’m getting up early!

" Collect is a magazine about taking pride in what we do, and where we live. It shines a spotlight on things done well and explores ways that we might be able to do things better. We believe the future is small. Worldwide, the hyper-local is gaining importance, and the car-fuelled tomorrow is grinding to a halt. Small cities - and the small cities within cities - are re-emphasising the importance of community. People are returning to the corner store - and that’s where you’ll find us." Follow them here.
